HIGH QUALITY TRAINING   BROAD GENERAL EDUCATION

The wide range of courses offered in the school gives graduates the best opportunity for professional realization in their specific fields. The goals of the courses are clear and diverse. Students may continue their education at university or start working directly. They are prepared for management positions in the fields of tourism, the hotel industry and the catering industry.

The High School of Economy and Tourism Aleko Konstantinov is situated in the most picturesque town in the Rhodopi mountains. The school was founded in 1975. The idea for its establishment came from the Municipality Council of Velingrad, and it gained the approval of the Ministry of Public Education. The school was opened following a decision by the Pazardzik Regional Court, made public in a letter number 11 2003 from August 26, 1975.

In 1975 the high school began functioning as a vocational-technical school in the catering sector. The first principal of the school was Mr. Ivan Mirchev, who was in office until 1989.     The fields of activity of Aleko Konstantinov include educational work and vocational training of specialists for catering establishments chefs, waiters and barmen. New students are admitted after completing their first eight years of studies. The full course of training takes three years. Up to 1983 the following courses were added to the list of courses offered at the school: Baking and Pastry-making Industry Operator and Textile Industry Operator. A production training complex of L&P (learning & practice) has been established in the school and it offers professional qualifications such as Chef, Sales Consultant and Operator of Textile Production.

Mrs. Ivanka Tsanova was principal of the school from 1989 to 1992.The demand for more qualified specialists required the introduction of new vocational courses in 1991 such as Technique and Technology of Production and Service in Public Catering. New students are admitted after completing their first eight years of studies and the full length of the training takes four years. A new course, Accountancy and book-keeping was introduced the following year and another one, Management in the hotel industry, in 1993. During the 1994/ 95 school year, there were three new vocational courses for the first-year students: Technique and Technology of Production and Service in Public Catering, Accountancy and Book-keeping Hotel Management.  The principal at the time, Mr. Velichko Achev, made extramural training in these courses also possible.

On April 4, 1995 the school was renamed High School of Economy and Tourism Aleko Konstantinov- Velingrad following order No. 14.04, issued by the Ministry of Education. Mr Alexandar Tabakov has been principal of the school since the end of 1996.

In 1998, the school offered students two brand new five-year training courses. New students are admitted after completing their first seven years of studies. The ground-breaking about these courses is the fact that one of them includes an intensive course in English during the first year, and another one provides an intensive course in German, which is a result of the co-educational Austrian-Bulgarian project BAK-TOURMAN . We have developed a new curriculum, furnished workshops and lounges with computers and trained qualified teachers.

Equipment
The school has at its disposal the best equipped computer and foreign language laboratories in Velingrad. Furthermore, there is a number of modern computer facilities. There are 15 computers in one of the three computer labs. It gives students the opportunity to gain basic knowledge and a better understanding in Computer Science. Training is a great pleasure, because the computers are connected in a network and the students have the ability to communicate with each other.

The second lab is equipped with seven powerful PC- PENTIUM 3 computers, which provide an excellent opportunity for students to enter the world of information technology.  The third lab is a training lab containing 6 fully equipped up-to-date computers with PENTIUM 3 processors and a WINDOWS NT operational system. There is special software for the hotel industry in the lab. The computers are supplied with quick access to the INTERNET, which contributes to their better training in various subjects.    The foreign language lab (the languages studied there are English, German, French and Russian) has TV, video and tape recorders. Physics, Chemistry and Biology labs are equipped as well as those in other schools. The school also has an excellent Economics and Accountancy lab and two workshops for chefs and one for pastry cooks. There is a separate lab for serving and a canteen where students can have lunch at reduced prices. There are also two different workshops where snacks are prepared and later sold at the students café in the school.  The school has a gym hall and a big playground for almost all sports.

Finally, if youre seeking the perfect high school for you, look no further! The High School of Economics & Tourism has it all! It is a cozy and pleasant place, and it is fun to be here.

"Medical Tourism" Project

2001-2002

A bilateral student project between three Bulgarian schools and the High School of Tourism Krems (HLF Krems), funded by KulturKontakt Austria and carried out by k.education Agency for Projects Sofia in cooperation with the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science.

Beginning of the project: May 2001.

End of the project: February 2002.

In May 2001 was launched the bilateral student project "The Medical Tourism in Bulgaria and Austria" between the High School of Tourism Krems and three Bulgarian pilot schools, which are included in the project BAK-TourMan.

In the course of two weeks (in May 2001 in Bulgaria and in January 2002 in Austria) a total of 43 Bulgarian and Austrian students studied the current tendencies in the development of medical tourism in the two countries under the guidance of Herman Paschinger (HLF Krems). The results of their work were presented at the beginning of February 2002 at public events in the High School of Tourism Krems and in the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (bm:bwk) in Vienna.

The project was used as an example during the development of the national school projects, which were launched in the fall of 2002 in Bulgarian, Romanian and Albanian pilot schools included in the TOUR-NET project.
